Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Jarrell, Texas. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched. With centers in cities across the country, we can facilitate hair tests efficiently. Typically requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or elsewhere on the body, these tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or cater to specialized testing requirements.

In recent developments, drug testing practices increasingly incorporate hair follicle analysis. This method is favored by numerous employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts over conventional urine tests. Organizations dedicated to zero-tolerance on drugs, courts, and probation services rely on these tests. The advantage of hair follicle testing is its ability to detect drug use over an extended period of up to 90 days through supervised collection, making it nearly tamper-proof. For identifying recent drug use, within a 5-day window, however, urine tests are still preferred.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair archives long-term data of alcohol and other substances by sequestering biomarkers within its growing fibers. When taken near the scalp, hair offers a detection window of nearly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment containing approximately 200 strands of hair (around the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp delivers 100mg of hair, the preferred sample for evaluation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg is advised. It is best to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If head hair is not accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. 'Head hair' denotes scalp hair exclusively. 'Body hair' encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial handling of a sample within a lab's system. This step includes checking that the sample has been sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input not supported by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient way to dismiss drug presence in most samples, a positive result must be validated to stand in court. Any samples registering presumptively positive in Screening require further confirmation.

When a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are sourced from hair at much lower levels compared to other approaches (ex. urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most complex to execute.

Positive screening outcomes are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples noted as presumptively positive undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The full lab procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, while urine tests have a more brief detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating in a hair drug test is notably challenging, rendering the results more precise.
  • Records past usage: It can outline a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent intake.

Shortcomings:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs require roughly 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Variables like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: While commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
