Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Joel, Texas. If you require a hair-based substance or alcohol analysis, we specialize in this method and have testing facilities across cities nationwide capable of conducting it. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is needed for the test, which can screen for substances, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored options.

Recently, drug testing methodologies have leaned towards hair follicle tests more frequently. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are choosing this over conventional urine tests. Hair drug screenings are favored by zero-tolerance employers, judicial systems, and those on probation. One key advantage is the longer detection window, up to 90 days, with supervised collection, and it's nearly impossible to tamper with. Nevertheless, for recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer up to roughly a 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample, comprising around 200 strands of hair (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, produces 100mg of hair, the perfect sample for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional testing, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair is not present, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial handling of a sample within a laboratory's system. This process involves confirming that the sample was appropriately sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for controlled substances. While Screening is a cost-efficient method for dismissing drug use in most samples, a positive screening outcome needs confirmation to be permissible in legal proceedings. Any samples indicating a presumptive positive in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and set for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is considered the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The whole laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a limited detection period.
  • Resistance to tampering: It is exceedingly difficult to manipulate a hair drug test, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can depict a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Detection of drugs in hair requires approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly compared to other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: While commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing significantly outperforms traditional urine tests in Joel, TX, due to its superior accuracy and reliability over time. Unlike urine tests, hair follicle analysis detects drug use over an extended period, usually up to 90 days, providing a comprehensive history of substance use.
Benefits of Hair Testing include:

  • Longer detection window versus urine tests
  • Better resistance to tampering
  • Higher accuracy for broader time frames

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Joel, TX, excels with its extended detection window, identifying drug use for up to three months. This detailed assessment allows employers to evaluate an individual's longer-term substance history, offering a clearer picture than urine tests. Detecting drugs over such an extended timeframe helps organizations make informed decisions about current or potential employees.

This comprehensive view supports safer workplace strategies, focusing not just on recent, but also on past substance use behaviors. It's a method widely regarded for uncovering long-term trends and misconduct, making workplaces more secure.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Joel, TX, hair follicle testing provides a highly secure and tamper-resistant method of substance testing. The nature of the hair sample makes it challenging to alter, greatly reducing the risk of sample adulteration compared to urine tests. This ensures that results are trustworthy and cannot be easily manipulated or contaminated.
Advantages include:

  • Lower likelihood of adulteration
  • Strict observation during sample collection
  • Enhanced reliability

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
