Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Johnfarris, Texas. If a hair drug or alcohol analysis is necessary, they excel in hair sampling, with centers across all cities Nationwide prepared for such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from the scalp or body. This test can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific substances.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained prevalence. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair analyses over standard urine testing. Employers with strict no-drug policies, along with legal systems and probation services, utilize these tests. The key benefit is a longer drug detection period, usually extending up to 90 days, collected under observation, making deception nearly impossible. For drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the optimal choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations are increasingly recognized as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When harvested near the scalp, hair is capable of providing up to a three-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is uncomplicated, relatively challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in size) nearest the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation processes. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analyses beyond 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advisable. It is suggested to weigh the hair using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be retrieved, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, it explicitly pertains to scalp hair. Body hair signifies all other categories of hair (such as facial or axillary).

Process Overview

Laboratory processing of a drug test follows four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage where a sample is documented into the laboratory's system. This ensures that the sample was adequately sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any omitted data entry not supported by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary check for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-saving approach to exclude substance misuse in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed to be court-admissible. Samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening require a subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample return a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction stage. Drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than those in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly challenging.

Confirmation of positive results from Screening is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo cleansing before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection durations.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is extremely challenging to deceive a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Tracks usage patterns: Hair tests reveal drug use patterns over time, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become noticeable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than alternate drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination analyzes the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
