Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Jolly, Texas. If a hair drug or alcohol assessment is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analyses, with facilities in every city across the nation equipped to handle the task. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Hair tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair analysis options.

The usage of hair follicle drug testing has risen significantly in recent years. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are increasingly opting for hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. Organizations with strict anti-drug policies, legal entities, and individuals on probation frequently employ hair follicle evaluations. Hair follicle tests offer an extended detection period, up to 90 days, collected under observation, making them difficult to undermine. Despite this, urine tests remain the most accurate for drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The strands of hair trap biomarkers, providing a retrospective of substance use over time. Collected close to the scalp, hair offers up to a 3-month window of detection for alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, adulteration is challenging, and shipping is convenient.

A sample size of 1.5 inches, approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp, yields 100mg, which is ideal for initial and confirmatory testing. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. It is beneficial to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a proportional amount of body hair can be utilized. Head hair specifically pertains to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key phases in processing a drug test in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first stage of integrating a sample into a lab's system. It involves confirming the sample's seal and shipment, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary check for drugs. It is an economical way to dismiss drug use in most samples; however, a positive result in Screening must be confirmed for legal validity. Any samples testing positive in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

If a sample turns positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for further preparation in Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is among the most complex to execute.

Positive Screening results undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before Confirmation if necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation standards ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair tests can reveal drug use history up to 90 days prior, unlike urine tests with shorter windows.
  • Difficulty to cheat: The nature of hair drug testing makes it difficult to manipulate results, enhancing accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: Hair tests can show a timeline of drug use over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair tests typically incur higher costs compared to other methods.
  • Variability in results: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can affect drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While often termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
