In Jonah, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing administers hair follicle drug testing efficiently. When you require a hair or alcohol screening, our specialization in hair analysis makes us your go-to. With testing facilities available across the nation, most cases only need at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your crown or body. We can detect various substances or offer specialized analyses.

The popularity of hair follicle drug assessments has surged recently, often replacing urine tests. Numerous employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse specialists now favor these tests. They're ideal for entities with strict drug policies and for monitoring individuals under probation. With a detection span reaching up to 90 days, observed collections, and resistance against tampering, this method is unparalleled unless recent use within five days is being assessed, where urine tests excel.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair holds a prolonged record of substance ingestion by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer an approximate 3-month detection window for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of approximately 200 strands of hair (roughly equivalent to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, the preferred sample size for evaluation and confirmation. For EtG, additional assays, and/or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We advise measuring the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent volume of body hair may be obtained. When discussing head hair, we are specifically addressing scalp hair only. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal stages in the laboratory examination of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the preliminary processing of a specimen into a laboratory’s framework. This involves verifying proper sealing and shipment of the specimen, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry that is not provided by an electronic chain of custody process.

Screening consists of an initial rapid examination for substance abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient way to eliminate drug use in the majority of samples, a positive screen must be validated for court acceptability. Any samples that are provisionally positive in Screening do necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample is provisionally positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at much smaller concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging technique to execute.

Validation of any positive screening finding is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All provisionally positive samples are cleansed before validation as necessary. The entire laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug assays can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, contrasted with urine tests that possess a shorter detection span.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Supplies historical context: It can deliver a pattern of drug consumption over a period, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It requires approximately 5-7 days for substances to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assays are typically costlier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Aspects such as hair color and individual variations in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites within the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually involves the hair strand and not the hair follicle under the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Jonah, TX, hair follicle testing is undoubtedly preferable over urine testing. One definitive strength is its higher detection accuracy, capturing substances long after they have left the urine, providing a snapshot of prolonged use.

Traditional urine tests often fail to match the comprehensive detection window offered by hair tests. This makes hair testing invaluable for employers seeking dependable assessments that reflect true usage patterns.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Jonah, TX, find hair follicle testing invaluable due to its extended detection window of up to 90 days. This wide span offers a detailed perspective on the substance use history of applicants or employees.

Unlike other testing methods, hair follicle tests grant a longer timeframe to evaluate drug use patterns, granting more comprehensive insights into an individual's habits over time.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Jonah, TX, recognizes hair follicle tests for their resistance to tampering. Unlike other methods, they significantly reduce the risks of adulteration, ensuring the credibility and reliability of the results.

By nearly eliminating opportunities for manipulation, hair tests stand out as highly dependable, leaving little room for doubt or question in drug test outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
