Delivering comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Josephine, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair and alcohol testing. We offer extensive National coverage with centers ready to conduct hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your crown or body is required. Our analyses include drugs, alcohol/ETG, and more tailored options.

Lately, hair follicle drug testing is increasingly favored for detecting substance use. Employers, courts, and addiction experts now prefer hair tests over urine tests. Hair tests support stringent drug-free policies with their extended 90-day detection window, making them highly accurate and secure, although urine tests are superior for identifying recent use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the evolving hair strand. Collected near the scalp, hair can yield a detection timeframe of about three months for alcohol and other drugs. It's easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximate size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp amounts to 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key phases in processing a drug test in the laboratory are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step in which a sample is entered into the laboratory's system. This step involves confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and sent, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be court-admissible. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If the Screening phase indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample to prepare for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are retrieved from hair at lower concentrations than in other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is one of the most challenging methods to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening results is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are washed as needed. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation alongside the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can ascertain drug usage for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to manipulate: It's nearly impossible to deceive a hair drug test, thus enhancing result reliability.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides an overview of drug use trends over time, not just immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing testing methods in Josephine, TX, hair follicle testing surpasses urine testing in accuracy and reliability. Employers find greater assurance from the extended detection period of hair tests, which captures a comprehensive overview of drug use.

While urine tests provide immediate drug use insights, hair tests deliver a broader historical perspective. This makes hair tests invaluable for organizations enforcing zero-tolerance policies, enhancing workplace integrity and safety.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing in Josephine, TX, offers unparalleled insights. Spanning up to 90 days, hair tests cover a longer substance history, granting employers crucial knowledge about potential risks and behaviors.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
