Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Jubilee Springs, Texas. Specializing in hair-based testing for drugs and alcohol, we provide services Nationwide, ensuring easy access to our hair testing centers in every city. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. These tests detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for specific testing needs.

Recent trends reveal a shift towards hair follicle drug testing for substance checks. Employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts now favor hair tests due to their advantages over urine testing. With extended detection periods of up to 90 days and minimal chances to manipulate the observed collection process, hair tests are ideal for zero-tolerance policies. However, urine tests are still preferred for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a valuable method for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug usage by incorporating biomarkers within its growing strands. When taken from near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol usage over approximately a 3-month period. Hair collection is straightforward, surprisingly hard to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) from nearest the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal amount for tests and confirmations. For tests involving EtG, additional panels above 10, 150mg is advised. It is a good practice to weigh the hair specimen using a jeweler's scale. In scenarios where scalp hair is absent, an equivalent amount of body hair is a viable option. Note, "head hair" refers strictly to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes types such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

Four fundamental steps are involved in processing drug test outcomes in a lab: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab's systems. This step ensures the sample is correctly sealed and transported, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and includes any manual data entry required by a non-electronic chain of custody.

Screening constitutes an initial cursory inspection for common drugs of abuse. Though cost-efficient in excluding drug use for the majority of samples, a positive in Screening mandates further confirmation to be legally valid. Any samples testing positively through Screening thus necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample test positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original batch for the Extraction step. This phase involves removing drugs at low concentrations from the hair—an aspect distinguishing hair screening as the most challenging methodology in comparison to other methods such as urine or oral fluid testing.

Confirmation of any positive screening results is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technologies. All initial positive samples undergo a washing process before confirmation if needed. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning through to Confirmation is subject to review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can recognize drug use up to 90 days back, whereas urine tests detect a much shorter timeframe.
  • Cheat-resistant: The likelihood of manipulating a hair drug test is low, resulting in more accurate outcomes.
  • Chronicles drug use over time: It offers data on a pattern of drug consumption over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Does not detect recent consumption: Drugs only become traceable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs relative to other drug testing techniques.
  • Inconsistent results: Hair color and individual differences in hair growth can sway drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite the term "hair follicle tests," these procedures assess the hair strand itself, not the follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
