Accredited Drug Testing offers full-service hair follicle drug screening in Justin, Texas. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing, with available centers throughout the U.S., capable of conducting hair tests. Typically, hair from the crown of your head or body (1.5 to 2 inches) can be used. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized testing options.

Lately, drug testing methods have increasingly included hair follicle tests. Many workplaces, legal systems, and substance abuse specialists now prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests appeal to employers with strict no-drug policies, as they are used by courts and for those on probation. The main advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window, often up to 90 days, collected via observed methods, and almost impossible to falsify. Conversely, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a significant method for identifying substance consumption. Hair retains a lengthy record of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of hair strands as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal up to an approximately 3-month detection duration for substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and easy to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil), can provide 100mg, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation processes. For EtG, supplementary tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. In the context of head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other hair types, including facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test comprises four crucial steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial submission of a specimen into a laboratory's system. This stage includes checking that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method for excluding drug usage on most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be court-admissible. Samples that are tentatively positive during Screening require subsequent confirmation.

When a sample is arguably positive during the Screening phase, supplementary hair is extracted from the initial sample for further Extraction. In this phase, substances are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than those in other testing methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing one of the more complex methods to execute.

The confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All tentative positive specimens undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can trace substance usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a more limited detection timeframe.
  • High tamper resistance: It is exceedingly challenging to compromise a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: The test can reveal a history of drug usage over a prolonged period, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapacity to detect recent usage: Detecting drugs in hair requires approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth rates may influence the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand rather than the follicle located beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Justin, TX, hair follicle testing surpasses urine testing as it offers unparalleled accuracy and reliability. While urine tests have their merits, hair testing's extended detection period and reduced susceptibility to cheating give it an edge over traditional methods.

Employers and legal systems increasingly favor hair testing due to its comprehensive nature. This superior approach ensures more accurate and long-term drug use tracking, vital for maintaining stringent zero-tolerance policies and legal compliance.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing provides a significant advantage with its ability to detect drug use over a much longer period, typically up to 90 days. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
