In Keenan, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. Our expertise in hair testing means we have centers all across the nation ready to conduct these tests. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body for testing. These tests screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for other specific needs.

Increasingly, the use of hair follicle drug tests has been adopted over traditional urine tests. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse counselors now prefer hair testing. This method benefits from a more extended detection period, lasting up to 90 days; the process is observed and is largely cheat-proof. However, urine tests remain the preferred choice for detecting recent drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Accredited Drug Testing - Hair Testing

Recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption, hair analysis offers an extensive record by embedding biomarkers within the growing fibers. When samples are taken near the scalp, the test can reveal substance use spanning up to three months. The collection process for hair is straightforward, poses challenges to tampering, and allows for convenient transportation.

Gaining accurate results requires a 1.5-inch portion comprising about 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil thickness) collected nearest the scalp, ensuring about 100mg, which is optimal for analysis. For comprehensive checks, such as EtG additions or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. The specimen’s weight should be verified using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, equivalent body hair may be used. References to head hair specifically address scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Overview of the Process

The laboratory analysis of a drug test encompasses four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning denotes the initial integration of the sample into the lab’s system. This phase ensures that the sample is properly sealed and transported, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary information not entered electronically.

Screening provides a preliminary assessment for illicit substances. Despite its cost-efficiency in excluding drug use for most samples, positive screenings necessitate verification to be permissible legally. Samples returning presumptive positive results in Screening undergo additional confirmation.

In cases of presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair from the original sample is prepared for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are separated from the hair at concentrations significantly lower than alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug testing.

Verification of any positive screening outcomes is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed prior to confirmation when necessary. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, aligns with both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Merits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection durations.
  • Challenging to falsify: Hair drug tests are difficult to circumvent, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It offers a timeline of drug use over months, not just recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs require 5-7 days to appear in hair samples.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual growth disparities can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Important: Often called "hair follicle tests", the actual test involves analyzing the hair strands, not the follicles under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
