Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Keene, Texas. Those in need of hair drug or alcohol testing can rely on Accredited Drug Testing, with centers across all cities Nationwide that conduct hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. Hair tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, alongside other tailored hair testing services.

In recent times, the hair follicle drug test has become a go-to method for drug testing. Many workplaces, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Companies adhering to strict no-drug policies, judicial bodies, and those on probation often choose hair follicle tests. These tests offer an extended detection timeline of up to 90 days, involve direct collection processes, and are tough to tamper with. Nonetheless, for recent drug use detection within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now viewed as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and substance usage by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When taken near the scalp, this method can reveal alcohol and drug use over roughly a 3-month period. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easily transported.

A 1.5-inch length comprising around 200 strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil’s thickness) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. Accurate weighing of the sample on a jeweler’s scale is suggested. Where scalp hair cannot be obtained, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes facial, axillary, and other types.

Overview of the Process

The primary steps in processing a drug test result in a lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into the lab’s system. This process includes confirming the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data entry not provided by the electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. While Screening offers a cost-efficient method for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be legally admissible. All presumptive positive samples from Screening must be confirmed through additional analysis.

When a sample appears positive in the Screening phase, more hair is separated from the original specimen for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

For any screening results that show positivity, Confirmation employs techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive specimens are cleaned before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning through to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • High resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test proves very challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Tracks consumption history: The test can demonstrate a drug usage pattern over time, beyond just recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Limited recent use detection: Drugs become traceable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug testing is generally costlier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result fluctuations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth rates can impact drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Though commonly termed "hair follicle tests", it is the hair strand that is analyzed, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
