Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Kingsmill, Texas. For those needing a hair drug or alcohol analysis, we specialize in such testing, featuring centers across the nation capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. Options for analysis include drugs, alcohol/ETG, and custom hair testing solutions.

Recently, the preference for drug testing increasingly includes the hair follicle method. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. These are favored in contexts with strict no-drug policies, legal environments, and probation scenarios. The main advantage is the extended detection window, up to 90 days, ensuring accuracy and being hard to falsify. Yet, urine tests remain most effective for drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for uncovering the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair traps biomarkers within the fibers of a developing strand, offering a historical overview of substance intake. Collecting hair near the scalp allows for a detection period of up to around 90 days for drugs and alcohol. The collection process is straightforward, tampering is relatively challenging, and shipping is uncomplicated.

Collecting a 1.5-inch section containing roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) from close to the scalp provides 100mg, which is the ideal amount for screening and confirmation. For tests involving EtG, add-ons, or panels above 10, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We advocate for using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent portion of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core steps involved in the laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into a laboratory system. This procedure includes checking that the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any needed data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid check for drugs of abuse. While it is a cost-effective method to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be court-admissible. Any samples showing presumptive positives during Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepared for the Extraction stage. During this phase, substances are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of positive screening results is executed via techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation alongside the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Cheating is difficult: The accuracy of hair drug tests is high, as tampering is very difficult.
  • Historical usage pattern: These tests reveal a timeline of drug use, highlighting patterns beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to cost more than other drug testing methodologies.
  • Result variations: Differences in hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence the concentration of drug metabolites within the hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the test actually analyzes the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
