In Kinwood, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Our expertise in hair drug and alcohol testing is unmatched, with facilities nationwide prepared to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. These hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized to suit specific testing needs.

The use of hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly popular, with many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists opting for it over traditional urine tests. Favorable for zero-tolerance workplaces, judicial mandates, and probationary requirements, the primary advantage of hair testing is its extended 90-day detection window, ensuring a highly accurate and tamper-proof procedure. However, for recent drug use detection within 5 days, urine testing remains more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying substance use, including drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a historical record of substance intake by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When harvested near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol exposure over a period extending up to three months. Hair samples are straightforward to obtain, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment made up of roughly 200 hairs (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both initial screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, add-ons, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is preferable. It's advisable to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If head hair can't be collected, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (such as facial, axillary, and so forth).

Process Overview

The principal stages in laboratory handling of a drug testing specimen include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the process of integrating a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step involves validating that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, attributing a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any outstanding data absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an expedited assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method for eliminating drug use for the majority of tests, a positive screening necessitates subsequent confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples marked presumptively positive during the Screening stage must undergo additional confirmation.

In cases where a sample appears presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction stage. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than in other testing methods (such as urine or saliva), contributing to the complex nature of hair drug testing.

Confirmation of any positive screening findings is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies. All samples yielding a presumptive positive screening result are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The end-to-end laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify substance use for as long as 90 days, while urine tests feature a shorter detection duration.
  • Minimal cheating opportunity: Manipulating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, lending greater reliability to the results.
  • Historical usage insights: Hair testing can indicate drug consumption patterns over time, not limited to recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: Drugs become noticeable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and personal discrepancies in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
