In La Grulla, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. Should you require a hair-based drug or alcohol examination, our expertise in hair testing is complemented by our nationwide network of testing centers, including those that serve La Grulla. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body suffice for these tests, which can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other customized testing needs.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug testing has gained traction as a preferred method for detecting drug use. Many entities, including employers and courts, alongside Substance Abuse professionals, opt for hair tests over traditional urine analysis. Employers with stringent no-drug-use policies, those in the court system, or individuals on probation often use hair tests. The key advantage lies in their prolonged detection window, typically up to 90 days, making them hard to tamper with. Nonetheless, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain unbeaten.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as a significant means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of alcohol and drug usage by locking biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. Collecting hair close to the scalp provides up to an approximately 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair gathering is straightforward, challenging to falsify, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hairs (about the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the perfect sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We recommend using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If no scalp hair is available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we refer solely to scalp hair. Body hair covers all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab’s system. This includes validating that the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not available from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary quick assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be admissible in court. Any samples originally positive in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

In cases where a sample is initially positive in the Screening stage, additional hair is used from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. In this step, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most complex method to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is done via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All originally positive samples are cleaned prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which possess a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: It is extremely challenging to deceive a hair drug test, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical data: It can provide a timeline of drug use over a period, not just current use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect immediate use: Approximately 5-7 days are needed for drugs to become ascertainable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in results: Aspects such as hair color and individual variations in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the examination itself analyzes the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
