Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in La Joya, TX. For hair or alcohol testing needs, trust Accredited Drug Testing, which excels in hair analysis. Our nationwide network means you can access hair tests in any city. With 1.5 to 2 inches of crown hair or alternative body hair, we analyze for drugs, alcohol/ETG or tailor specific hair test solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a preferred option for drug assessments. Many businesses, legal bodies, and substance abuse experts now opt for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Used by zero-tolerance workplaces, courts, and probation programs, hair tests benefit from an extended detection span of up to 90 days, are observed during collection, and are extremely hard to tamper with. For drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests are more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for the identification of drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and other substances by encasing biomarkers within the fibers of the expanding hair strand. Collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to about a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to mail.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for assessment and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analysis beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the hair is suggested. It is advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. If no scalp hair is available, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. Regarding head hair, we are referencing scalp hair specifically. Body hair pertains to all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four fundamental stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial handling of a sample into a laboratory's infrastructure. This process involves checking that the sample was securely sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial swift evaluation for drug abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug usage on most samples, a positive screen must be authenticated for courtroom acceptance. Any samples that show a presumptive positive during Screening necessitate a further confirmation.

In cases of presumptive positives during the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are retrieved from hair at a significantly lower concentration than using other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive results from screening is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a reduced detection timeframe.
  • High resistance to deception: Altering hair drug test results is very challenging, making the findings more trustworthy.
  • Offers historical insights: It evidences a drug usage pattern over time, not solely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal hair growth rate can influence the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination actually assesses the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In La Joya, TX, hair follicle tests outshine urine tests due to several advantages. Their superior detection accuracy makes them a preferred choice for discerning employers seeking reliable results. Hair tests offer an unmatched level of detection, capturing substance usage that urine tests may overlook, thus providing a broader understanding of the individual's history.

While traditional urine tests might suffice for recent drug detection, they pale in comparison to hair tests' comprehensive approach. This extensive detection ability makes hair tests a powerful tool in maintaining stringent workplace policies, showcasing their superiority over the conventional urine method.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
