Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in La Ward, Texas. If you require a hair or alcohol screening, we are experts in hair testing and have facilities all across the country ready to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp are needed, or body hair can be used. Hair assessments can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific needs.

Recently, drug testing methods increasingly adopt hair follicle tests over traditional urine tests. More employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse counselors are choosing hair drug tests. Firms with no drug use tolerance, court systems, and those on probation benefit from this method. Key advantages are prolonged detection, up to 90 days, the secured collection process, and its near-immunity to tampering. Nevertheless, urine tests remain optimal for detecting very recent consumption within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective means for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair acts as a secure reservoir for identifying substances by capturing markers within its fibers. When gathered near the scalp, hair offers a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to obtain, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A section measuring 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximating the size of a #2 pencil) adjacent to the scalp delivers 100mg of hair, which is optimal for testing. For EtG, add-ons, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair can't be obtained, an equal quantity of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively, while body hair indicates all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory handling of a drug test outcome entails four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step of introducing a sample into the lab's workflow. This procedure checks if the sample was properly sealed and delivered, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid evaluation for substances. Although Screening economically eliminates drug use on many samples, a positive test must be validated to be legally acceptable. Samples indicating a presumptive positive in Screening need a subsequent confirmation.

If a specimen shows a presumptive positive during Screening, more hair is pulled from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a concentration much smaller than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing exceptionally challenging.

Confirming any positive result is conducted through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. Each phase from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and follows ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair analysis can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a briefer detection period.
  • Difficult to deceive: Cheating a hair test is exceedingly tough, rendering results more accurate.
  • Reveals historical consumption: It demonstrates a trend of drug use over time, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Not effective for detecting recent consumption: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to be identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests typically cost more than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In La Ward, TX, hair follicle tests provide a compelling alternative to urine testing. They offer superior detection accuracy over extended periods, making them more reliable for continuous monitoring.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
