Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing at Lackland AFB, Texas. For those in need of hair or alcohol testing, our expertise lies in hair analyses, with service locations in every city nationwide ready to conduct these tests. Ideally, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the scalp is required, though body hair might be an option. Tests can screen for substances like drugs and alcohol (ETG), or be tailored for specific requirements.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become a more common method for substance checks. Various employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer this over traditional urine tests. Those enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, including courts and probation officers, often rely on hair tests for their extended detection capabilities—up to 90 days. Although highly reliable, the urine test remains most precise within a 5-day usage window.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an instrumental approach for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and other substances, encapsulating biomarkers within its growing fibers. When acquired near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use for approximately three months. Collection is straightforward, tampering is relatively challenging, and shipping is uncomplicated.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100 mg of hair, the preferred amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional assays, and assessments involving more than 10 panels, 150 mg of hair is suggested. It is advisable to weigh the hair using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair can be utilized. "Head hair" specifically denotes scalp hair, whereas "body hair" pertains to all other variants (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure in drug testing encompasses four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary introduction of the sample into the laboratory's system. This step includes ensuring the sample’s seal and shipment were correctly managed, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse markers. While Screening is a cost-friendly method to exclude drug usage in most samples, outcomes indicating drug presence must undergo Confirmation to be deemed valid for court proceedings. Samples that have a positive indication during Screening necessitate further verification.

If Screening yields a positive indication, additional hair is drawn from the original sample for Extraction preparation. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than observed in urine or oral fluid, making hair drug testing a challenging method to conduct.

Confirmation follows for any screening results indicating positivity and is performed using either GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Presumed positive samples undergo a washing process before Confirmation. Each phase from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specific standards and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation requirements.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair tests can ascertain drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have limited detection durations.
  • Cheating is difficult: The integrity of hair drug tests is generally higher, making manipulation of results challenging.
  • Chronological data: Hair tests can reveal patterns of drug consumption over time, instead of merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become identifiable in hair strands.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be costlier than other available methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair pigmentation and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations within the hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is commonly used, but the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
