Located in Lago, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings. Whether it's for alcohol or drug testing, they are proficient in hair analyses across a national network of testing facilities. A sample of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is typically required. Hair can be examined for various substances, including alcohol/ETG or other tailored testing options.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly popular for its reliable results. It's the choice for many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts, who prefer it over traditional urine tests. Used by companies with zero-tolerance policies, legal entities, and probationers, its longer detection window of up to 90 days ensures accuracy and a collection process that's hard to manipulate. Yet, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a powerful method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of substances by capturing biomarkers within the hair's fibers as it grows. When cut close to the scalp, hair can reflect a detection period of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to mail.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of approximately 200 strands (resembling the diameter of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional add-ons, and/or panels above 10, collecting 150mg is advised. It is advisable to use a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four fundamental steps in lab processing for drug test results are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial procedure of entering a sample into the lab system. This step involves confirming the correct sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entries if not provided via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary swift assessment for substances of abuse. While it is an economical approach to eliminate drug usage in most samples, any positive results in Screening must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Presumptively positive samples from Screening require further confirmation.

For presumptive positives during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. This step involves isolating drugs from hair at concentrations considerably lower than in other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing particularly challenging.

Positive screenings are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS methods. Before confirmation, all presumptive positives are washed as required. The entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests can track drug use for up to 90 days, surpassing the detection period of urine tests.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, thus ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical usage data: It can outline a pattern of substance use across time, not just recent incidents.

Limitations:

  • Lack of recent detection: It generally takes 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Price: Hair drug testing tends to cost more than other forms.
  • Result discrepancies: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth diversities can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed as "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing offers significant benefits over traditional urine testing in Lago, TX. The primary advantage is its superior detection accuracy, which spans a period of up to 90 days, compared to urine tests' shorter window. The reliability of hair testing is unparalleled, as it minimizes the risk of false negatives and sampling errors. This method offers a greater assurance of authenticity and credibility in testing outcomes.

Extended Detection Window

One of the standout features of hair follicle testing in Lago, TX, is its extended detection window. This method enables the identification of drug use over an extended period, up to 90 days, providing a comprehensive view of an individual's substance usage pattern.

For employers, this extended window offers an invaluable tool for understanding an applicant's or employee's history. By providing a more extensive snapshot of substance use, hair follicle testing ensures informed decision-making.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
