Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Lake City, Texas. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol testing, our specialization in hair analysis is supported by testing facilities available nationwide to conduct the necessary tests. Typically, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body suffices. Hair samples are tested for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized options.

Recently, there has been an increase in the use of hair follicle drug tests as a method for screening. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often choose hair drug tests over urine tests. Hair testing is favored by those with zero-tolerance policies and by courts overseeing probation individuals. Its main advantage includes a detection window of up to 90 days, overseen collection, and high resistance to tampering, whereas urine tests remain superior for recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has gained recognition as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can capture a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to about 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch segment with roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, an ideal amount for both screening and confirmation. For testing involving EtG, additional requirements, and/or more than 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. It's suggested to weigh the sample with a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair not be present, an equivalent volume of body hair is permissible. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other types like facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The lab processing of drug test outcomes is comprised of four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase, incorporating the entry of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step ensures the sample's integrity upon receipt, includes the assignment of a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening serves as a preliminary assessment for drug presence. While Screening effectively excludes drug use in most samples, a positive result needs verification for legal admissibility. Samples showing presumptive positives in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

When a sample is detected as presumptive positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for the Extraction phase. This involves obtaining drugs from hair at reduced concentrations compared to methods like urine or oral fluid, validating the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation for any positive screening result is through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if required. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation complies with both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection period.
  • Challenge to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is quite difficult, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Shows usage patterns: It reveals a timeline of drug use across an extended duration, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although sometimes labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair to urine tests, hair follicle testing in Lake City, TX, emerges as superior. Hair tests offer unmatched detection accuracy, making them reliable for employers and legal authorities.

While urine tests are common, hair follicle testing excels with its extended detection period and enhanced reliability. The thoroughness of hair testing ensures it remains the preferred choice for accurate results.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Lake City, TX, boasts an extended detection window, identifying substance use up to 90 days prior. This long detection period provides employers insight into an individual’s drug history.

By extending the detection window significantly, hair follicle tests offer a broader view of an applicant or employee's substance use. This comprehensive assessment proves invaluable for company policies in Lake City.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Lake City's hair follicle testing minimizes tampering risks. Its method of detecting drug metabolites in hair strands ensures reliable results, nearly eliminating the chance of sample alterations.

Hair tests stand as a tamper-resistant option in drug screening. By analyzing hair strands for substance metabolites, this method safeguards the integrity of results beyond what traditional testing can offer.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
