Located in Lake Colorado City, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. If you're in need of hair-based drug or alcohol testing, our specialization in this area ensures top-notch service, with centers spread across the nation. A minimum hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is required, either from the crown of the head or other body parts, for effective analysis. The tests detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer customized options.

Hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly popular in recent years. Many employers, judicial entities, and substance abuse experts are opting for these tests over the conventional urine tests. They are favored by employers with strict no-drug policies and those overseeing individuals on probation. Hair tests offer a longer drug detection timeline, up to 90 days, with highly reliable and almost fraud-proof collection methods. For recent drug use detection, urine tests remain more precise for the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers in its fibers as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can present a detection period of up to three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides about 100mg of hair, which is the ideal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For tests involving EtG, additional substances, or over 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. Utilizing a jeweler's scale for weighing the specimen is advisable. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. When referring to head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other hair types (such as facial hair, axillary hair, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab process for determining a drug test result involves four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the primary processing of a sample within a lab’s framework. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and sent, allocates a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completes any supplementary data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening represents an initial rapid examination for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for court validity. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening demand a secondary confirmation.

For samples presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the primary sample and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of positive screening results is achieved with GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples considered presumptive positive are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the accreditation for ISO / IEC 17025 requirements.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests that have a more limited detection timeframe.
  • Resistance to cheating: It's exceedingly difficult to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing the credibility of the results.
  • Historical usage data: It illustrates patterns of drug use across a timeline rather than solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It generally takes around 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While these are often called "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle tests to traditional urine testing in Lake Colorado City, TX, the advantages are clear. Hair testing offers superior detection accuracy and boasts a longer detection but also presents a more reliable history of drug use compared to urine tests.

While urine tests are capable of detecting recent consumption, hair tests deliver a more comprehensive detection window, offering employers in Lake Colorado City deeper insights into an individual's substance use.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Lake Colorado City, TX, benefit significantly from the extended detection window offered by hair follicle testing. Analyzing drug usage up to 90 days back provides an in-depth view of a person's past behavior.

The extensive detection period ensures employers can assess a candidate's long-term substance use habits, making hair testing an invaluable tool for thorough screenings.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Lake Colorado City, TX, hair follicle tests are admired for their tamper-resistant qualities. By reducing the risk of sample adulteration, they deliver unquestionable results, maintaining integrity throughout the testing process.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
