Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Lake Creek, Texas. If a hair drug or alcohol test is what you need, our expertise in hair testing makes us the ideal choice, with centers across cities nationwide ready to conduct your test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body will suffice in most situations. Hair testing can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other specific analyses.

In recent times, utilizing hair follicle drug tests has become a more common approach in drug testing procedures. Many workplaces, judicial systems, and substance abuse counselors now mandate a hair drug test rather than the conventional urine test. This method is favored among employers with stringent anti-drug policies, court systems, and probation officers. One key advantage is the extended detection window for drug consumption, up to 90 days, with collections done under supervision to prevent tampering. Yet, for detecting drug use within the prior 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers in its growing fibers. When hair is collected near the scalp, it offers an approximate 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, provides 100mg of hair and serves as the optimal sample for screening and confirming results. For tests involving EtG, additional screenings, or over 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we mean solely scalp hair. Conversely, body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing procedure in a laboratory involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is about the initial process of integrating a sample into the laboratory’s system. It involves ensuring the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary rapid assessment for drug presence. Although it is a cost-effective means to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive screen must undergo confirmation to be court-admissible. Any samples suspected to be positive in Screening need a subsequent confirmation.

When a sample appears presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. This phase involves retrieving drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a challenging methodology.

Positive screening results are confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo a wash before confirmation as required. The laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing identifies drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a brief detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to deceive: Manipulating a hair drug test is very difficult, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It reveals a drug use pattern over an extended period, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle underneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Lake Creek, TX, hair follicle testing offers superior benefits over traditional urine tests. Unlike urine samples, hair samples provide a broader detection window and are less prone to manipulation, leading to more accurate and reliable outcomes. Employers and legal authorities favor hair tests for these reasons, especially when a trustworthy assessment of substance use is crucial.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
