In Lake Dallas, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Should you require a hair or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analyses and boasts numerous testing locations across the nation. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the head or body is required. These tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer unique hair analysis options.

The trend towards hair follicle drug tests for screening has grown in recent years. Courts, employers, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair tests over the traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, as well as courts and those on probation, utilize hair follicle tests due to their lengthy detection span of up to 90 days and the secure collection process. However, the urine test remains the best method for detecting recent substance use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and drug presence by capturing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When taken close to the scalp, hair can reveal up to around a 3-month period for detecting alcohol and drug use. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch length of approximately 200 hair strands (around the diameter of a #2 pencil) near the scalp generates 100mg of hair, the preferred quantity for analysis and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. It’s suggested to measure the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a comparable amount of body hair is acceptable. Head hair pertains solely to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, and so forth).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning constitutes the initial handling of a sample into a laboratory's database. This process entails ensuring that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any further data input not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary fast evaluation for potential drug abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug usage in the majority of specimens, any positive screen must be verified to be legally valid. Samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening need follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample display a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair from the initial collection is taken for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at a much lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), highlighting why hair drug testing is one of the most complex methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo a wash prior to confirmation as needed. The comprehensive laboratory sequence from Accessioning through to Confirmation is evaluated in line with the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair recognition and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can detect substance use for a duration of up to 90 days in contrast to urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Cheating on a hair drug test is notably challenging, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Yields historical insights: It delivers a timeline of drug use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: It requires around 5-7 days before drugs can be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
