In Lakeport, Texas, complete hair follicle drug testing is provided by Accredited Drug Testing. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, we are specialists in hair testing, with facilities across all cities nationwide. Typically, hair from the crown of the head, measuring 1.5 to 2 inches, or body hair is needed for the test. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or include other tailored testing options.

The use of hair follicle drug tests for drug testing has grown in recent years. Instead of urine tests, many employers, the courts, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair drug tests. Employers with strict drug policies, as well as courts and probation supervisors, favor this method. Its key advantage is detecting drug use over a 90-day span, making it hard to tamper with. However, urine tests are more accurate for usage in the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as an effective method for identifying alcohol and drug use. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair shaft. When sourced near the scalp, hair can offer up to a three-month detection range for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches with about 200 strands of hair (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or exams above 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. When we refer to head hair, it indicates scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab’s system. This involves ensuring the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any supplementary data not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid examination for drug abuse. Though Screening provides a cost-effective method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples that are initially positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a specimen is initially positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and set for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are drawn from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and certification to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is very hard, leading to more precise results.
  • Provides historical data: It can reveal a drug use pattern over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors such as hair color and individual variations in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle underneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
