Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Lakeside, Texas. Whether it's for drugs or alcohol, our specialty in hair testing ensures proficiency, with centers available in all cities across the nation. A length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from the head or body. Our services allow for analysis of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored hair testing alternatives.

The preference for hair follicle tests in drug screening has grown. Increasingly, employers, justice systems, and Substance Abuse professionals opt for hair analysis over traditional urine tests. Employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, legal entities, and probation departments use these tests for their extended detection period, often up to 90 days, with secure collection methods that are difficult to falsify. Conversely, for recent substance use, urine tests remain reliable within a five-day timeframe.

What it is, How it works

Testing hair is recognized as an effective approach for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers within its strands, providing an extended history of substance use. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal about a 90-day detection period for both alcohol and drugs. It's easy to gather, tougher to tamper with, and straightforward to send.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (similar to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg, the preferred amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional checks, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for exact measurement. If scalp hair isn’t available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be sampled. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair covers other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The prominent steps in lab processing of a drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample undergoes initial setup in a lab’s database. This step checks that the sample is properly sealed and delivered, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening executes a swift preliminary assessment for drug presence. While effective for dismissing drug usage in most cases, a positive screen demands confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Any samples presumed positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample test positively during Screening, additional hair from the initial sample is readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are removed from hair at concentrations much lower than in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug tests notably challenging.

Confirmation for any positive screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples deemed presumptively positive are rinsed prior to confirmation as needed. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is scrutinized under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a briefer detection range.
  • Hard to falsify: Manipulating a hair drug test is notably challenging, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical insight: It offers a record of drug usage over time, rather than merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Not for recent use: Detecting drugs in hair takes around 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are often pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the evaluation is actually of the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Lakeside, TX, outshines traditional urine tests by offering unmatched detection accuracy. This form of testing surpasses the conventional methods by identifying drug history over an extended period, providing more dependable and credible outcomes, thus ensuring substance use detection cannot be easily circumvented.

Reliability of hair testing stems from its ability to identify drugs up to 90 days post-consumption, compared to the brief window urine tests offer. This makes the method preferable for both employers and other agencies implementing zero-tolerance policies.

Extended Detection Window

A significant advantage of hair follicle testing in Lakeside, TX, is its extended detection window. Unlike other methods, hair testing provides insights into an individual’s drug use over a period of up to 90 days, offering employers more detailed data on an employee's or applicant's substance use history.

This longer detection timeframe allows for comprehensive analysis of substance habits, ensuring that even sporadic substance use is noted, aiding employers in making more informed decisions about candidates and existing employees.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
