Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Laketon, Texas. For those in need of a drug or alcohol test via hair samples, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in the field, with centers nationwide ready to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from the crown of your head or body. Hair testing can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in drug testing methods. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse consultants prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation services often choose hair follicle tests. The key advantage is their extended detection period, lasting up to 90 days, with a supervised collection process that’s hard to compromise. However, for drug use detection within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust method for uncovering drug and alcohol usage. Hair serves as a chronological record of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers within the matrix of the hair strand as it grows. When obtained from the scalp area, hair can offer nearly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and various drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising about 200 hair strands (similar to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or screenings exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. We suggest weighing the specimen on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't accessible, a proportional quantity of body hair can be used. "Head hair" exclusively denotes scalp hair. "Body hair" includes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result follows four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory's system. This stage ensures the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigns it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any required data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for substance abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective method to exclude drug use across most samples, a positive result must be verified to be legally acceptable. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than with other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug tests the most challenging technique to conduct.

Confirmation for any positive screen results is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if required. The entire laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and conforms to ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a more limited detection timeframe.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating on a hair drug test is very challenging, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: Offers a timeline of drug use over a duration, not limited to recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after around 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Aspects such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can alter the levels of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Despite commonly being referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand itself, not the hair follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Laketon, TX, hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine tests by offering superior detection and reliability. Hair tests reveal a longer history of drug use, making them invaluable for employers who need comprehensive assessments. Compared to urine tests, hair testing is a more dependable indicator of ongoing substance habits.

Extended Detection Window

With an extended detection window of up to 90 days, hair follicle testing in Laketon, TX, provides employers with a thorough understanding of an individual's substance history. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
