Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Lakeview, Texas. Whether you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol examination, we excel in this area, providing nationwide testing centers to carry out hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is needed. These tests can evaluate for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific assessments.

Recently, the approach for drug testing has increasingly favored hair follicle assessments. Numerous employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts prefer this over standard urine tests. Organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and parolees often rely on hair follicle tests. Key advantages include a longer detection window—up to 90 days—and a supervised collection, making cheating nearly impossible. However, for drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a historical record of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a roughly 3-month window of detection for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of about 200 strands (approximately as thick as a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, or examinations beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If head hair isn’t obtainable, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. In our text, head hair refers specifically to scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result includes four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial entry of a sample into a lab’s system. This process involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and doing any extra data entry not available from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides an initial assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug use for most samples, a positive screen necessitates verification for court use. Any samples detected positive during Screening require a confirmation step.

Should a sample test positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are isolated from the hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening notably challenging.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is conducted through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies. All samples indicating positivity undergo washing before confirmation if needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can recognize drug use for up to 90 days, outlasting the shorter detection span of urine tests.
  • Resistance to manipulation: It is very challenging to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing the reliability of the results.
  • Distinctive historical data: It can illustrate a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting immediate use: It generally takes around 5-7 days for drugs to surface in hair.
  • Expenses: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests", the procedure precisely examines the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing to traditional urine assays, hair follicle testing stands out in Lakeview, TX for its superior detection accuracy. This method allows for a more reliable assessment of long-term drug use. It minimizes the risk of manipulation and provides a clearer picture of an individual's drug history, offering the assurance employers need in their screening processes.

Employers and agencies in Lakeview prefer hair testing for its comprehensive detection capabilities. Unlike urine tests that may only reflect recent usage, hair analysis covers a span of up to 90 days, providing an in-depth review of substance use. This extensive window offers greater reliability and detects recurrent patterns of drug consumption.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle tests in Lakeview, TX, present an extensive detection window, identifying drug use over a longer duration, up to 90 days. This broad timeframe ensures that employers have a detailed insight into an individual's past substance use, extending beyond the limitations of traditional testing methods.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
