Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Lakewood Heights, Texas. Whether you require a hair-based drug or alcohol screening, our expertise in hair testing extends to all cities Nationwide with centers ready to conduct tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from the crown or body. These tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized hair testing needs.

In recent trends, drug testing methods have more frequently incorporated hair follicle testing. A variety of employers, legal systems, and addiction specialists are choosing hair drug testing over traditional urine screens. These tests support organizations and individuals with strict drug policies or probation requirements by offering a longer detection period—up to 90 days—and a collection process that is directly supervised, making them highly tamper-resistant. However, urine tests remain the most accurate for detecting recent drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the expanding hair strand. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of up to around 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for analysis and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest weighing the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a similar amount of body hair might be used. When mentioning head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair pertains to any other hair type (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the laboratory processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial processing of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step includes confirming the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening includes an initial rapid check for drugs of misuse. While Screening is a cost-effective means to eliminate drug use on most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be permissible in court. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening need a secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as required. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection duration.
  • Challenging to cheat: It is quite challenging to tamper with a hair drug test, thus ensuring more accurate results.
  • Offers historical data: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs require roughly 5-7 days to be identifiable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand and not the hair follicle under the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
