Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Langtry, Texas. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this field with centers across the nation capable of conducting such tests. Generally, individuals should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown or elsewhere which may be analyzed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or custom hair testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method for substance detection. Numerous employers, legal entities, and substance abuse professionals opt for hair over traditional urine testing. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, the judicial system, and probation overseers favor this method. Its major advantage is an extended detection window of up to 90 days, secured through observed collection, effectively minimizing cheating. Nevertheless, the urine test maintains its accuracy for recent use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair provides a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When taken from near the scalp, hair can show drug and alcohol history for up to three months. It is easy to obtain, hard to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) from the scalp delivers 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG add-ons and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be collected, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process of drug testing consists of four stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is logged into a laboratory’s system. This step includes confirming the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening executes an initial rapid test for drugs of abuse. While Screening offers a cost-efficient method to identify drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for court validity. Presumptively positive samples in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity during Screening, more hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. Here, the concentration of drugs extracted from hair is much lower compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly challenging to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples, presumed positive, are washed prior to confirmation if necessary. The full laboratory process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests detect drug use for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a briefer detection period.
  • Difficulty to manipulate: Tampering with hair drug tests is very challenging, yielding more reliable results.
  • Historical use patterns: It reveals drug use patterns over time, not only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent drug use: Drugs become detectable in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors including hair color and individual variations in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although referred to as "hair follicle tests", this testing analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
