Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Larga Vista, Texas. Whether you require drug or alcohol testing via hair, Accredited Drug Testing is your specialist with centers across all cities nationwide. Typically, hair measuring 1.5 to 2 inches is necessary from the crown or body. This test screens for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for other options.

In recent times, drug testing methods increasingly incorporate hair follicle testing. It's favored by employers, courts, and substance abuse experts over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, as well as courts and probation services, opt for hair testing. Its key advantage is the extended detection period which spans up to 90 days. The test is conducted under supervision, making it nearly impossible to manipulate. Still, for drug usage within the last 5 days, urine testing remains most effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive record of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the fibers as hair grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair offers a drug and alcohol detection period of up to around three months. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It's best to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, a similar amount of body hair may be gathered. The term head hair pertains specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair, such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where a sample is integrated into a lab's system. This step ensures the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening effectively excludes drug use in most samples, a positive result must be verified for legal acceptability. Samples with a presumptive positive result in Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from the hair at a lower concentration than with methods like urine or oral fluid, making hair drug screening particularly challenging to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation, if required. The entire testing process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and conforms to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to evade: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: This method can show a timeline of drug use, not just recent occurrences.

Limitations:

  • Can’t identify recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Costly: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually focuses on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
