Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Las Lomitas, Texas. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing, with centers across all cities Nationwide ready to conduct a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is necessary. Hair tests are available for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other bespoke testing options.

Over recent years, drug testing methodologies increasingly incorporate hair follicle tests. Various employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts now mandate hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are integral to employers with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and probation programs, thanks to their extended detection period of up to 90 days, undergoing supervised collection, and being almost impossible to tamper with. However, for detecting recent use within the last five days, urine tests remain more effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by trapping biomarkers within the fibers of the extending hair strand. When collected from near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeline of up to approximately 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising roughly 200 strands of hair (around the size of a #2 pencil) from the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair might be collected. Regarding head hair, we are specifically referring to scalp hair alone. Body hair includes all other forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves initially entering the sample into the laboratory's system. This step includes checking that the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) randomly, and completing any pending data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening includes a preliminary fast check for drugs of abuse. Although it's an economical approach to dismiss drug usage for most samples, a positive outcome requires confirmation for legal acceptance. Any samples indicated as positive in Screening need secondary verification.

If a sample tests positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that test positive initially are washed as required before confirmation. The complete process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and conformity to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a briefer detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely difficult, resulting in more accurate outcomes.
  • Delivers historical data: It showcases a drug usage pattern over time, beyond mere recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expensive: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Though commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
