Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Laureles, Texas. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched. We have testing centers across the nation that can conduct a hair test. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body for most cases. Hair testing can be configured to check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method for detecting drug use. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals are now opting for this method over traditional urine testing. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and those on probation often use hair tests. The advantage of hair follicle tests is their extended detection window—up to 90 days—through an observed collection that is nearly impossible to tamper with. However, for drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Using hair as a testing medium has become increasingly recognized for its efficacy in identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive record of substances by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they develop. When the hair is sampled near the scalp, it can offer a detection timeframe of up to nearly three months for various substances. The collection of hair is straightforward, challenging to manipulate, and convenient to transport.

An ideal sample consists of a 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) located closest to the scalp, resulting in about 100mg of hair which is optimal for both screening and confirmation processes. For enhanced tests such as EtG, additional panels, or tests exceeding 10 categories, a 150mg sample is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is recommended. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable quantity of body hair can be utilized. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types, including facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing drug test results comprises four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the step where a sample is initially entered into the laboratory’s workflow. This phase involves confirming that the sample has been appropriately sealed and shipped, assigning it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not already addressed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary examination for drugs of abuse. While this step is a cost-efficient method to dismiss most drug usage cases, a positively screened result requires confirmation to be legally valid. Any samples classified as presumptively positive during Screening need to undergo additional verification.

When a sample tests as presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, the concentration of drugs extracted from hair is significantly lower compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is among the most complex methods to execute.

Confirmation of any positive findings from the Screening process is carried out through methods like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all samples marked as presumptively positive are washed accordingly. The complete laboratory protocol from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation standards of ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug consumption for up to three months, significantly longer than the shorter period detected by urine tests.
  • Rigorous test integrity: The difficulty of tampering with hair drug tests ensures the results are more reliable.
  • Chronological substance record: It provides an account of drug use over time, beyond recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetected: Drugs become traceable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to cost more than other testing alternatives.
  • Result variations: Differences such as hair color and individual hair growth patterns can impact the levels of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Laureles, TX, offers superior advantages over traditional urine tests. Its enhanced detection accuracy makes it a reliable choice for capturing substance use history.

Employers find hair tests particularly valuable, as they cover a broader detection window than urine tests, capturing substance use patterns effectively over extended periods.

Extended Detection Window

Laureles, TX, relies on hair follicle testing to unveil drug use history up to 90 days prior. This extended detection window offers employers a thorough view of applicants' or employees' substance use.

With a 3-month window, hair follicle tests give a comprehensive understanding of drug habits, ensuring informed decision-making and workplace safety.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Laureles, TX, is a preferred method due to its tamper-resistant nature. It ensures that the collected samples remain unchanged and provide genuine results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
