Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug assessments in Lawrence, Texas. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol analyses, we provide centers nationwide capable of executing these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body suffices. Hair assays can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific screening needs.

Recently, hair follicle assessments have become a favored method for drug testing. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are increasingly opting for hair tests over traditional urine analyses. Hair follicle tests are chosen by organizations with strict drug policies, judicial systems, and probation officers. They offer an extended detection window of up to 90 days, are collected under supervision, and are challenging to manipulate. However, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly acknowledged as a potent means for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive history of substance use by embedding biomarkers in the strands of the growing hair. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer up to an approximate three-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. It is easy to collect, less prone to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch snippet of about 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, providing the perfect sample for both analysis and verification. For EtG, extra tests, or evaluations beyond 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This step involves ensuring that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any extra data input not supplied by an electronic chain-of-custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for illicit drug usage. Although Screening is an economical approach to dismiss drug usage for most samples, a positive screening result must be confirmed for court acceptability. All samples that are potentially positive in Screening necessitate a secondary validation.

If a sample is potentially positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a much reduced concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening represents the most challenging methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are potentially positive undergo washing before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a narrower detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Circumventing a hair drug test is notably challenging, ensuring more precise results.
  • Provides historical data: It offers a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variations in results: Elements like hair color and individual variations in hair growth can affect the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Though commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to urine testing in Lawrence, TX, the former outranks the latter in terms of detection accuracy and reliability. Hair tests can reveal drug use over a longer duration, offering a more insightful view of an individual's substance habits.

Hair testing is less invasive and doesn't require on-the-spot collection compliance, unlike urine tests. Its confirmed detection window far exceeds that of urine tests, which is critical for assessing habitual use.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Lawrence, TX offers an extended detection window, making it more comprehensive than its urine counterpart. With the capability to detect drug use within a 90-day timeframe, it provides a detailed history of substance exposure.

This long detection span gives employers a clearer understanding of an applicant's or employee's substance use patterns, assisting in making more informed decisions about workplace safety and employee reliability.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Lawrence, TX benefits from the tamper-resistant nature of hair follicle tests, which significantly lowers the chances of sample adulteration. This approach ensures that results are reliable and beyond reproach, unlike more easily manipulated urine samples.

With hair testing, there's a reduced risk of cheating, providing organizations confidence in the authenticity of the results. This makes it a preferred choice for accurate and trustworthy drug testing.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
