Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Leesville, Texas. Specializing in hair and alcohol testing, we provide testing centers nationwide for your convenience. To qualify, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required, whether from the head or body. Hair tests can assess the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other specific testing options.

In recent years, there has been a shift towards hair follicle drug tests for screening. More employers, courts, and substance abuse experts opt for hair tests over traditional urine tests. This method is favored for zero-tolerance policies, probation checks, and legal requirements. The main advantage is its extended detection window of up to 90 days and the difficulty in tampering compared to urine tests, which remain vital for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

The process of hair testing has gained prominence as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period extending up to about 90 days for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of around 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil's thickness) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample size for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, it's advised to collect 150mg of the sample. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is recommended. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar amount of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair denotes any other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core steps in laboratory processing of a drug test result encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial processing of a sample into the lab's system. This step verifies that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry absent from the electronic chain of custody system.

Screening includes a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug use in the majority of samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples exhibiting presumptive positivity during Screening necessitate further validation.

If Screening suggests a positive result, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are removed from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), which is why hair drug testing is the most challenging approach to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Every presumptively positive sample undergoes washing before confirmation as needed. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Difficulty to cheat: It is very challenging to deceive a hair drug test, rendering the results more reliable.
  • Provides historical data: It delivers a drug use pattern over time, instead of only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle to urine drug tests in Leesville, TX, several advantages of hair testing become clear. Hair tests are celebrated for their superior detection accuracy over a longer term. Unlike urine tests, which may only catch recent drug use, hair testing provides reliability by covering up to a 90-day window, ensuring no recent drug activity is missed.

For employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, hair follicle tests offer a way to maintain rigorous standards with confidence. The longer detection period means fewer tests are needed, enabling cost savings while securing thorough compliance. Furthermore, these tests are highly resistant to fraud, unlike urine tests that can be adulterated.

Extended Detection Window

One of the standout benefits of hair follicle drug testing in Leesville, TX is its extended detection window. While traditional urine tests check for drug use in the past few days, hair tests provide insights into an individual's substance history for up to 90 days. This offers employers a broader understanding of an employee’s or job applicant's drug habits.

With the capacity to retain drug traces longer, hair tests equip employers with information crucial for maintaining a safe work environment. By revealing patterns of use, employers can make informed decisions aligned with their policies and ensure the safety and compliance of their workforce.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The hair follicle test is a tamper-resistant option for drug testing in Leesville, TX, offering enhanced reliability. Unlike urine tests, which can be adulterated or substituted, hair tests provide a secure and credible method of screening. Collecting hair samples under supervision ensures the sample is genuine and uncontaminated.

This robustness minimizes the risk of invalid results due to tampering. Employers favor this testing method as it offers clear-cut results, freeing them from concerns about possible manipulation, thus securing dependable tracking of employee compliance with drug-free policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
