In Leonard, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle tests for drugs and alcohol. They provide specialized hair testing services at testing centers nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair is required for testing. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offers customizable testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity for substance checks. Employers, courts, and professionals now opt for this over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and probation officers favor hair tests. The key advantage is its extensive detection period, up to 90 days, making it reliable and tamper-proof. For more recent drug use, within 5 days, urine tests retain higher accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol usage. Through capturing biomarkers within the fibrous structure of growing hair, it yields an extended history of alcohol and drug consumption. When taken from near the scalp, hair samples offer close to a 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample of about 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, the optimal sample for screening and verifications. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair is unobtainable, an equivalent body hair sample may be used. When mentioning head hair, it refers solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four inherent steps in laboratory processing of a drug test: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial procedure of incorporating a sample into the laboratory system. It involves confirming the sample was sealed and delivered correctly, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing additional data logging not provided by an electronic custody system.

Screening constitutes a preliminary swift assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening efficiently rules out drug use in most cases, a positive outcome demands confirmation for court viability. Samples with presumptive positives in Screening require secondary verification.

Upon encountering a presumptive positive in Screening, further hair from the original sample is prepared for Extraction. Drugs are isolated at notably lower concentrations in hair than in other sample types (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing exceptionally challenging.

Positive screenings undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives undergo necessary washing before confirmation. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests identify drug usage up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have shorter detection limits.
  • Cheating difficulty: Hair tests are hard to deceive, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insights: It chronicles drug use over time rather than indicating recent usage only.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs appear in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair testing is typically pricier compared with other drug tests.
  • Result variance: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth affect drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is done on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Leonard, TX, hair follicle tests surpass urine tests in various aspects. The superior detection accuracy makes hair testing a preferred choice. Urine tests have limitations in detecting long-term drug usage while hair tests offer lifespan insights.

Hair testing's reliability is unmatched, providing a transparent drug use history. Unlike urine tests, hair tests resist circumvention, ensuring genuine results for employers.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
