Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Liberty City, TX. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol tests, Accredited Drug Testing has expertise in hair testing, with facilities situated across all cities nationwide capable of conducting such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Hair tests can be tailored to analyze drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific needs.

In recent times, the hair follicle test has increasingly become a preferred method for drug testing. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals now favor the hair test over traditional urine screening. Employers with stringent no-drug policies, legal entities, and those on probation often rely on hair follicle tests. The key advantage lies in its extended detection window, typically reaching up to 90 days, collected through an observed procedure that is notoriously difficult to tamper with. However, for assessing recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has emerged as a significant method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a reservoir, retaining biomarkers within the fiber of the developing strand, thus offering a prolonged view of substance use. When collected near the scalp, hair can exhibit a detection span of up to three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section containing about 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal portion for both initial and confirmatory testing. For EtG, add-ons, and/or analyses above 10 panels, a sample size of 150mg is advised. It's recommended to weigh the material using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not obtainable, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab’s system. This phase involves confirming the sample’s sealed and correct shipment, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) at random, and completing any further data entry absent in the electronic custody chain system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid inspection for drug abuse. Though Screening efficiently discounts drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be corroborated to stand in court legally. Samples showing presumptive positives in Screening warrant a follow-up confirmation.

In cases where Screening yields a presumptive positive, additional hair from the original sample is selected for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most complex method to execute.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods confirm any positive Screening findings. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleansed as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair directive and the compliance with ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a brief detection period.
  • Difficulty in manipulation: Due to hair drug tests being hard to manipulate, results are more reliable.
  • Historical pattern insight: They can unveil a timeline of substance use over time, not just immediate usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs become perceivable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than alternative testing techniques.
  • Variability in outcomes: Factors including hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact the drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: The test, often mislabeled as "hair follicle tests", evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
