Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Lindsay, Texas. For those seeking hair tests for drugs or alcohol, Accredited Drug Testing offers specialized hair analysis with facilities available in cities nationwide. Hair measuring between 1.5 to 2 inches from the head's crown or body may be used in most situations. Hair tests can cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored options.

Recently, drug testing methods increasingly incorporate hair follicle drug assessments. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts often prefer hair testing over standard urine analysis. Hair tests prove beneficial for organizations with strict no-drug policies, the legal system, and those on probation. The main advantage is the extended detection timeline, revealing usage up to 90 days, with collection under observation, making it hard to tamper with. However, urine tests remain accurate for recent use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. By incorporating biomarkers within the strands of growing hair, hair offers a comprehensive long-term record of alcohol and drug presence. Collected near the scalp, hair may reveal a detection period of up to 3 months for substances. The collection of hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easy to transport.

When obtaining a 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hairs (resembling a #2 pencil in size) nearest to the scalp, this should yield 100mg of hair, an optimal amount for testing and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or analyzing beyond 10 panels, a collection of 150mg is advisable. It is suggested to measure the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be lacking, the same quantity of body hair may be substituted. The term head hair specifically pertains to scalp hair, whereas body hair pertains to all other types of hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Drug test result processing in the laboratory comprises four major stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

The Accessioning step involves the sample’s initial integration into the laboratory system. This step ensures the sample’s sealing and shipping were correct, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

The Screening step is a swift preliminary drug abuse check. While this method is budget-friendly for eliminating drug use in most samples, for legal admissibility, a positive screen requires confirmation. Any samples with presumptive positives during Screening warrant secondary confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is removed from the originating sample for Extraction. Drugs are retrieved from hair in concentrations lower than those in other tests like urine or oral fluid, contributing to hair drug screening's heightened complexity.

Confirmation uses techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS for any positive Screening outcomes. Presumptive positive samples are washed before Confirmation if necessary. Both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards oversee the complete laboratory process from Accessioning through to Confirmation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Compared to urine tests with shorter windows, hair tests trace drug usage up to 90 days.
  • Tough to manipulate: They are notoriously difficult to adulterate, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Traces past activity: Hair tests reveal a timeline of drug use over months, unlike other tests which only display recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect new use: Drugs require 5-7 days post-use to be observable in hair.
  • Higher expense: Hair drug testing often costs more than alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth may alter the level of drug traces in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly called "hair follicle tests", these tests examine the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
