Accredited Drug Testing in Longview, Texas offers comprehensive drug screening using hair follicle analysis. Whether for drugs or alcohol, our centers nationwide are equipped for precise hair testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from the scalp, though body hair can often be utilized. We provide diverse hair testing solutions, including drug, alcohol/ETG, and custom options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a popular drug screening method. Employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts often select this over urine tests. This approach is ideal for organizations with strict anti-drug policies, court requirements, or probation. The main advantage is the extended detection period—often up to 90 days—coupled with nearly foolproof observation, while urine tests remain reliable for recent drug use—up to 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a long-term record for alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair. When collected close to the scalp, a hair sample can offer up to about a 3-month window for identifying alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

An ideal hair sample for screening and confirmation involves a 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) taken near the scalp, providing 100mg of hair. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels beyond 10, a sample of 150mg is advised. It's suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. Head hair references scalp hair exclusively, while body hair encompasses other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Four key steps make up the lab processing of a drug test outcome: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system, ensuring it was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for abuse substances. Although Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug use in most samples, any positive screen must be verified for court admissibility. Samples with presumptive positives in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

Presumptive positives in the Screening phase prompt additional hair extraction from the original sample for preparation for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology.

Positive screening confirmations are made through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. From Accessioning through Confirmation, the full lab process is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection span: Hair drug tests detect drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a briefer detection span.
  • Difficult to tamper: Cheating a hair drug test is very hard, ensuring more precise results.
  • Tracks usage history: It shows a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to show in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to cost more than other methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
