Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Lord, Texas. For individuals needing a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, offering testing centers in various cities nationwide that can conduct a hair test. Normally, a 1.5 to 2-inch hair sample from the head or body is required. Hair tests can be customized to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific testing needs.

The trend towards using hair follicle drug tests instead of traditional methods has increased recently. Many organizations, courts, and substance abuse specialists now prefer hair drug tests over urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and probationary programs are adopting hair follicle tests. These tests are notable for their longer drug detection window of up to 90 days, are administered under supervision, and are extremely hard to tamper with. For drug screening within the past five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair offers a comprehensive history of alcohol and other drugs by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When harvested near the scalp, hair can reveal up to approximately a 3-month detection window for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 strands of hair (about the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We recommend weighing the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be collected, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. When discussing head hair, we are specifically referring to scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The quartet of steps involved in the laboratory processing of a drug test result covers Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial processing of a sample within a laboratory’s system. This incorporates verifying that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening encompasses an initial rapid check for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical way to rule out drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must undergo confirmation to be admissible in court. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening do require a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is drawn from the initial specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methodologies (ex. urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most complex methodology to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which possess a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to tamper with: It is notably challenging to tamper with a hair drug test, enhancing the results' accuracy.
  • Provides historical insight: It affords a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally more costly than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual variances in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test itself evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
