In Louise, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Whether you require a drug or alcohol test utilizing hair, our testing experts are here to help. With centers available nationwide, we can facilitate a hair test anywhere. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is generally necessary, from either the crown or body. Our hair analysis options include tests for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and customized requests.

Over recent years, hair follicle tests have become a preferred method for drug testing. Various entities like employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals demand hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Equipped to uphold zero-tolerance drug policies, these tests are implemented by employers, judicial systems, and probation officers. The main advantage of hair follicle testing lies in its extended detection window of up to 90 days, with a closely monitored collection process, making it hard to tamper with. Yet, for identifying recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of substances by embedding biomarkers within growing hair fibers. Collected from near the scalp, it can offer a detection timeline of up to 3 months for substances. It is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches from about 200 strands of hair, akin to a #2 pencil diameter, will yield an approximate 100mg sample suitable for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional panels, or tests above 10 panels, 150mg of the hair specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair can be gathered. “Head hair” denotes scalp hair only, whereas “body hair” refers to all other hair types, such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary handling of the sample within the laboratory system. It involves confirming proper sealing and shipping, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry not covered by an electronic custody system.

Screening is a preliminary evaluation for drugs of abuse. While Screening is cost-effective for ruling out drug usage in most samples, a confirmed positive is necessary for legal proceedings. Any samples that are potentially positive in Screening need a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample is potentially positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction process. Here, drugs are extracted from the hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine, oral fluid), underscoring why hair drug screening is complex.

Confirmation of positive results uses GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples presumptively positive are cleaned before confirmation if required. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests trace drug usage for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Challenge to compromise: Hair drug tests are hard to manipulate, ensuring result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals drug usage trends over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • No detection of recent usage: Drugs take about 5-7 days before they are traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally costlier than other methods.
  • Result variation: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the testing actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Louise, TX, outshines traditional urine tests by providing superior detection accuracy and reliability. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
