Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Lucas, Texas. Our expertise lies in hair and alcohol testing, with centers across all U.S. cities for your convenience. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are required. We offer tests tailored for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized needs.

Hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly popular in recent years. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often choose this method over traditional urine tests. With a detection window of up to 90 days, hair tests are preferred for their accuracy and the difficulty in tampering. However, urine tests are still favored for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a prolonged history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of the hair as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to a three-month window of detection for various substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. It's recommended to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. When we mention head hair, we're specifically referring to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The main stages in the laboratory analysis of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step in entering a sample into a lab's system. This process involves ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any remaining data entry that isn’t covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary and rapid evaluation for drug abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug presence in the majority of samples, a positive result must be confirmed for it to be valid in legal settings. Any samples that test positive during Screening will require further confirmation.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for further analysis during the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from the hair at concentrations much lower than those found in other methods like urine or oral fluid. Hence, hair drug testing is considered one of the most challenging methods to execute.

Confirmation of any positive results obtained in Screening is conducted through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples that show presumptive positive results undergo cleaning before confirmation, as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is checked under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection duration.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating is very difficult, resulting in more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a timeline of drug use over an extended period, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent usage: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments tend to be costlier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests," the analysis actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When compared to traditional urine tests, hair testing in Lucas, TX offers superior accuracy and reliability. Despite the prevalence of urine testing, hair analysis extends an unmatched detection window. Why do hair follicle tests stand out? Because they efficiently uncover drug use patterns up to 90 days back, offering a broader picture of an individual's substance usage history. This is why many employers favor hair testing, ensuring stricter adherence to zero-tolerance policies.

Extended Detection Window

One of the defining advantages of hair follicle tests in Lucas, TX is their extended detection window. These tests can trace drug usage over the past 90 days, providing employers with a comprehensive understanding of a person’s substance habits. Such an extensive timeline is invaluable for organizations committed to maintaining a drug-free environment. Therefore, these tests are particularly favorable for roles requiring utmost accountability and responsibility.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The inherent design of hair follicle testing makes it an exceptional choice in Lucas, TX for tamper-resistant testing. The challenge of adulterating or manipulating a hair sample means results are more trustworthy than those from urine tests. Employers and legal entities rely on the certainty provided by hair testing, minimizing risks associated with drug test cheating.
Thus, hair follicle tests are favored for their reliability and near-impossibility of sample substitution.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
