In Lydia, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. Our expertise in hair testing extends Nationwide with centers across all cities, ready to conduct your desired tests. Typically, the analysis requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your crown or body. These tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and provide additional customizable testing options.

Increasingly, drug tests rely on hair follicle analysis. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts are shifting from urine testing to this method. Zero-tolerance workplaces, legal systems, and probation departments favor hair tests. With a detection window extending to 90 days, this method offers an observed, nearly foolproof collection. Conversely, urine tests remain superior for detecting recent use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal up to about a 90-day timeline for detecting drugs and alcohol. This method is easy to obtain, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising around 200 hairs (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) from the scalp delivers 100mg, which is ideal for testing and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or screenings beyond 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample is suggested. If head hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be substituted. By “head hair,” we mean only scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test outcomes includes four steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary processing of a specimen in a laboratory's system. This includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any extra data input that isn't automatically supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary assessment for drugs of misuse. While it's a budget-friendly approach to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive result requires validation to be court-admissible. Samples that show a preliminary positive in Screening must undergo further confirmation.

If a sample shows a preliminary positive in Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. In this stage, drug compounds are removed from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing one of the most challenging methodologies to carry out.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All preliminary positive samples are cleansed beforehand if necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation of ISO / IEC 17025 norms.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can uncover drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter period.
  • Hard to falsify: Manipulating hair drug test results is challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Gives a history: It depicts a timeline of drug use rather than just recent involvement.

Disadvantages:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become evident in hair.
  • Costs: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than other methods.
  • Variability: Elements like hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" generally refers to tests on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to traditional urine tests in Lydia, TX, the advantages are clear. Hair testing allows for a more extended detection window, capturing drug use from up to 90 days prior. This approach surpasses the limited detection durations of urine tests, making it a valuable tool for thorough substance screening.

The superior detection accuracy and the long-standing reliability of hair testing make it the preferred choice for comprehensive drug evaluations.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
