In Mabank, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. This includes hair drug and alcohol tests. With testing centers located nationwide, we specialize in hair testing for a variety of substances. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is required from the crown or other body areas. Hair tests can be tailored for specific drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized purposes.

Recently, the use of hair follicle drug tests has gained traction as the preferred method for drug screenings, replacing urine tests. Employers, court systems, and substance abuse experts often opt for this method. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, judicial proceedings, and those on probation favor it for its longer detection period of up to 90 days. Hair tests are nearly impossible to tamper with but urine tests remain best for capturing drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now widely regarded as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand, hair can reveal a prolonged account of alcohol and other drug use. When collected near the scalp, it can offer a detection window of up to three months for alcohol and other drugs. The collection process for hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient to transport.

A segment of hair measuring 1.5 inches, containing around 200 strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil), nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg, which is the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and panels above 10, a 150mg sample is advised. It's best to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it pertains to scalp hair only, while body hair includes all other forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the introductory phase where a sample is integrated into a laboratory’s system. This involves confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for the presence of drugs of misuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to negate drug use in most cases, positive screenings must be verified for court admissibility. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require further confirmation.

In cases where a sample shows presumptive positivity during the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to implement.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive are washed prior to the confirmation process as necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire laboratory procedure undergoes review per the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug utilization for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a more limited detection span.
  • Difficult to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug consumption over time, not just current use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It typically takes between 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result discrepancies: Variables like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites within the hair.

Note: Often referred to as "hair follicle tests," this test assesses the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing offers distinct advantages over urine testing in Mabank, TX. While traditional urine tests are standard, hair tests provide superior detection accuracy and reliability, examining substance use over a 90-day window. This extended insight into an individual’s drug consumption history is invaluable for employers making informed staffing decisions.

Unlike urine tests, which may only reveal drug use from the past few days, hair testing's detection span enables employers to identify long-term usage patterns. This higher accuracy level ensures a drug-free workplace, maintaining safety and peace among staff members.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Mabank, TX, offers an unparalleled detection window of up to 90 days, making it an effective tool for employers seeking a long-term view of applicants' or employees' substance histories. Hair tests provide a comprehensive look into prior usage, surpassing the limited scope of urine tests.

This extended period of detection is crucial for companies aiming to keep drug-free workplaces. It empowers decision-makers to assess a candidate's overall suitability based on their prolonged history with substances, rather than recent behavior alone.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

One of the significant advantages of hair follicle testing in Mabank, TX, is its resistance to tampering. This method drastically minimizes the risk of sample adulteration, offering results employers and individuals can fully trust. The collection process and analysis are designed to ensure authenticity and accuracy.

Hair tests are less susceptible to the common cheating methods often associated with urine tests. This increased level of security benefits employers by providing unquestionable proof of substance use, helping enforce stricter and more effective substance-free policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
