Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Manning, Texas. If you require a hair drug or alcohol screening, our specialized services cater to hair testing, and we operate testing centers across all major cities in the U.S. for your convenience. Hair from the crown or other body parts, typically between 1.5 to 2 inches long, is suitable for these tests. Analyze your hair sample for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or choose from a variety of customized options.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become part of standard procedures. Employers, legal entities, and substance abuse specialists now often prefer this over traditional urine tests. Zero-tolerance workplace policies, court mandates, and probation requirements frequently include hair tests due to their extended detection timeframe, often up to 90 days, high reliability, and resistance to tampering. However, urine tests remain the preferred choice for identifying drug use within a 5-day period.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. A sample collected near the scalp can offer a detection window of up to roughly 90 days for alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional panels, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the hair is advised. It is best to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not a possibility, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. Head hair pertains to scalp hair only, whereas body hair includes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Procedure Summary

The primary steps in the lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial input of a sample into the laboratory’s system. This process confirms that the sample was correctly sealed and sent, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry required if not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial swift examination for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach for excluding drug usage from most samples, a positive result demands confirmation to be legally valid. Samples that test presumptive positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is drawn from the initial sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screen result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing if necessary before confirmation. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the standards set by ISO / IEC 17025.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a more limited detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, making the outcomes more reliable.
  • Chronological use data: It can show a pattern of drug consumption over a time span, rather than just recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing usually involves higher costs than other methods.
  • Variability in results: Aspects like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact the level of drug metabolites found in the hair.

Note: Though commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test assesses the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle tests to traditional urine tests, the advantages become clear. Hair screenings provide superior accuracy in drug detection and offer elevated reliability. Manning, TX, employers increasingly opt for hair tests as they deliver a longer detection window and resist manipulation, ensuring trustworthy outcomes. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
