Located in Martins Mill, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, our company is proficient in hair testing with centers available across numerous cities nationwide. Typically, you need between 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body. These tests can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized hair testing options.

In the past few years, hair follicle drug tests are increasingly preferred for drug testing. Many workplaces, judicial institutions, and Substance Abuse experts now opt for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. These tests serve employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, the courts, and individuals on probation. The main advantage includes a significantly extended detection period for drug use, generally up to 90 days, via an observed collection process that's nearly impossible to deceive. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the most accurate for detecting usage in the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly viewed as a robust method for detecting the use of drugs and alcohol. It captures a prolonged history of substance use by locking biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When obtained close to the scalp, hair can reveal substance usage over an up-to-three-month span. It is straightforward to collect, relatively hard to adulterate, and easy to ship.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches comprising about 200 strands, approximately the size of a #2 pencil, nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg, the ideal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler's scale for weighing. If scalp hair is inaccessible, collecting an equivalent amount of body hair is an option. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core steps involved in laboratory handling of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning addresses the preliminary integration of the sample into the laboratory's system. It consists of confirming the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and handling any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical way to exclude drug use in most cases, a positive outcome requires confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples suspected positive in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If a sample indicates possible positivity during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at a lower concentration than seen in alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underpinning why hair drug analysis proves most complex to conduct.

Confirmation of positive screening results is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples deemed presumptively positive undergo necessary washing prior to confirmation. The complete laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can spot drug use for as long as 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which cover a shorter term.
  • Hard to tamper with: Cheating a hair test is notably challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Historical insight: They offer insight into drug usage patterns over time, not merely recent instances.

Limitations:

  • No recent usage detection: Drugs become apparent in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair tests tend to be pricier than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can alter metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the test actually assesses the hair strand, not the scalp-embedded follicle

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
