Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug evaluations in Martinsville, Texas. If a hair drug or alcohol screening is required, Accredited Drug Testing provides expert hair testing, with centers across all American cities prepared to conduct these tests. Generally, individuals need 1.5 to 2 inches of cranial or body hair. Tests can assess for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specified hair testing.

The use of a hair follicle drug test has become more widespread in recent years. Employers, legal entities, and addiction specialists increasingly favor hair drug testing over traditional urine testing. Many organizations maintain zero-tolerance drug policies using hair tests, which boast a 90-day detection timeline. While almost impossible to rig, urine tests remain ideal for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures a prolonged record of narcotics and alcohol by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When sourced near the head, hair can reveal a detection span for substances of around 3 months. Hair is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch section comprising roughly 200 strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation procedures. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or panels beyond 10, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler's scale. If hair from the scalp is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we mean solely scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test includes four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial integration of a sample into the lab’s system. This process ensures the sample was sealed and transported correctly, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any other data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary rapid evaluation for the presence of drugs. While Screening is an economical method to rule out drug use for most samples, a positive result needs confirmation for legal validity. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, substances are removed from hair at a far lower concentration relative to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug testing is the most complex technique to implement.

The Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is carried out utilizing GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples preliminarily positive are washed as necessary before confirmation. The end-to-end laboratory operation from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to deceive: It is notably hard to manipulate hair drug tests, thereby enhancing accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can depict a pattern of drug use across a timeframe, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs become noticeable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result discrepancies: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand instead of the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to urine tests in Martinsville, TX, the former clearly has significant advantages. Hair testing offers enhanced detection accuracy due to its extended detection window, capturing drug use over a prolonged period. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
