Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Marysville, Texas. Catered to those requiring a hair drug or alcohol test, they have centers nationwide, ready for hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair suffices. Hair tests offer detection for drugs, alcohol/ETG or customized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in drug screening. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often favor hair tests over urine tests. Especially valued by entities with zero-tolerance drug policies, it offers longer detection periods, reaching up to 90 days, through non-tamperable collection. However, for recent drug use detection, within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The fibers in hair strands capture biomarkers, providing an extended history of substance use. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. It is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of specimen is suggested. It is advisable to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equal quantity of body hair may be used. The term scalp hair refers specifically to hair on the head, while body hair covers other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory process for a drug test result encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system, ensuring the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any necessary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for common drugs. Although Screening is a cost-effective means to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive result in Screening requires confirmation to be legally viable. Samples that yield presumptive positives during Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methods, like urine or oral fluid, rendering hair drug screening the most complex methodology.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods are used to confirm any positive Screening results. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation when necessary. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests capture up to 90 days of drug use, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection duration.
  • Difficulty in deception: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insights: It offers a pattern of substance use over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests," the analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
