In Maxwell, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing solutions. Our services cover hair and alcohol tests, specializing in hair assessments, with testing centers ready across countless cities. For most cases, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is needed. Hair tests can effectively detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or accommodate other specialized options.

Recently, there's been a notable increase in the preference for hair follicle drug tests over traditional methods. Employers, court systems, and Substance Abuse experts opt for these tests to replace standard urine evaluations. Such tests align with zero-tolerance policies, probation requirements, and legal mandates, thanks to a prolonged detection scope of up to 90 days, structured under scrutinized collection protocols, minimizing chances of deception. However, urine remains the best option for assessing recent drug usage within five days.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a long-term record of alcohol and drug exposure by encapsulating biomarkers within the hair's growing fibers. When cut near the scalp, hair offers up to a roughly three-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is uncomplicated, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample with a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't obtainable, a comparable amount of body hair is acceptable. 'Head hair' denotes only scalp hair. 'Body hair' encompasses all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing into the laboratory's system. This step includes confirming the sample was properly sealed and shipped, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional required data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. Though Screening is a cost-effective means to eliminate drug use in most samples, confirmation is necessary for court acceptability in the event of a positive screen. Any samples provisionally positive in Screening require subsequent verification.

Should a sample test provisionally positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are derived from hair at a lesser concentration than other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screening is the most challenging technique to conduct.

Confirmation for any positive screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every provisionally positive sample undergoes washing as required before confirmation. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation, meeting ISO/IEC 17025 standards for accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can identify drug intake for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to manipulate results: It is extremely challenging to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Provides usage pattern: This test offers an overview of drug use over a timeframe, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is generally costlier compared to other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis involves the hair strand and does not include the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Maxwell, TX, hair follicle testing offers distinct advantages over traditional urine tests. The superior detection accuracy and reliability of hair tests make them an ideal choice for comprehensive assessments. Unlike urine testing, hair tests provide a broader detection window, making it easier to identify patterns of substance use, thus ensuring that evaluations are both thorough and dependable.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing excels in identifying drug use over extended durations, with a detection window reaching up to 90 days. For employers in Maxwell, TX, this capability provides a comprehensive overview of an individual's substance use history, going beyond short-term assessment. This long-term insight aids in informed decision-making and fosters a safer work environment, thanks to a thorough understanding of an employee's past drug use.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
