Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing services in McGregor, Texas. Whether for drugs or alcohol, we specialize in hair testing and have numerous centers across the nation capable of performing these tests. Typically requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body, our hair tests are versatile and can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom hair testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method for drug screening. It's favored by employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals over standard urine tests. Particularly valued by organizations with strict no-drug policies, hair tests cover a longer detection period of up to 90 days, are conducted under observation, and are difficult to falsify. For detecting recent drug use, within five days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a potent method for discerning drug and alcohol use. Hair offers a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drug consumption by embedding biomarkers within the strands of the growing hair. When procured from near the scalp, hair can present up to an approximately three-month detection window for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tough to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) from the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg specimen is suggested. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is recommended. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be gathered. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result entails four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of integrating a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step involves ensuring the sample was securely sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and conducting any further data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening serves as an economical approach to exclude drug use on most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be legally valid. Any samples that show presumptive positives in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. In this step, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly complex to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as needed. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to tamper with: It is quite challenging to falsify a hair drug test, which enhances result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It can expose a drug use pattern over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are often pricier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the scalp's hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
