Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug examinations in McLean, Texas. If you're in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol examination, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities available nationwide for conducting these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Hair analysis can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other specific tests.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly prevalent for substance detection. Many workplaces, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair drug testing over the conventional urine type. This form of testing is chosen by employers with strict no-drug policies, legal entities, and individuals under supervision. One major advantage is its extended detection period for drug use, often extending up to 90 days, gathered through a monitored collection process, which is nearly foolproof. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting recent drug activities within a five-day period.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol usage. Hair can display a prolonged history of alcohol and drugs by trapping biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When obtained near the scalp, hair offers up to a three-month detection period for alcohol and drug presence. The collection process for hair is straightforward, with little chance of tampering, and is easy to send for analysis.

Obtaining a 1.5-inch sample of around 200 hair strands (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is an ideal specimen for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, additional tests, or those surpassing 10 panels, 150mg of the hair sample is advised. It's recommended to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The complete laboratory procedure for processing a drug test is composed of four principal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step in integrating a sample into a laboratory system. It involves ensuring the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and recording any additional information not provided through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a primary rapid test for identifying drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to detect drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be legally permissible. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

In cases of presumptive positives in the Screening stage, additional hair is removed from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During this process, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), contributing to the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumably positive undergo washing before Confirmation if required. The entire laboratory process, ranging from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes assessment under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with a more limited detection span.
  • Hard to falsify: The difficulty in cheating a hair drug test enhances the accuracy of the results.
  • Offers historical insight: It reflects a drug use pattern over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs typically become noticeable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite concentration in hair can vary due to factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests," the assessment actually evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle underneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
