Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in McQueeney, Texas. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair analysis and have nationwide testing centers ready to conduct your test. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body for testing. Our assessments can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for various other hair testing needs.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity. A growing number of employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts prefer hair testing over the traditional urine analysis. Hair follicle tests are ideal for organizations with strict no-drug policies, courts, and those on probation. The primary advantage is its extended detection window, covering up to 90 days with observed sample collection, making it highly secure against tampering. However, for detecting drug use within a recent 5-day window, urine tests remain the preferred choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments are now viewed as a potent method for detecting substance and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-standing record of alcohol and narcotic substances by capturing biomarkers within the strands' fibers. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer roughly a 3-month window for tracking alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair samples is straightforward, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg, the ideal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or evaluations over 10 panels, a sample weighing 150mg is advised. It's recommended to use a jeweler's scale for specimen measurement. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equivalent amount of body hair is an option. By head hair, we mean solely scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four principal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the sample's initial integration into the lab's framework. This step ensures the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry missing from an electronic custody framework.

Screening offers a preliminary rapid assessment for substance abuse. Though Screening is cost-efficient for ruling out drug usage in most cases, any positive findings require validation for court acceptance. Samples deemed presumptive positives during Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

If a sample indicates a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is sourced from the original specimen for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug tests among the most intricate to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire laboratory workflow is inspected per both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with limited detection timeframe.
  • Cheating is tough: It's exceedingly challenging to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing reliability.
  • Gives historical data: Offers a pattern of substance consumption over time, beyond recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot uncover recent use: It typically requires 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Costly: Hair drug tests generally surpass other testing methods in expense.
  • Result discrepancies: Elements like hair color and growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
