Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Meadows Place, Texas. For anyone needing hair drug or alcohol tests, our specialty lies in hair testing, with facilities across various cities nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other hair testing needs.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become an increasingly preferred method for substance detection. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts frequently opt for hair tests over traditional urine examinations. Zero-tolerance employers, legal courts, and those on probation utilize hair tests for their long detection period, up to 90 days, which is hard to manipulate. However, urine tests remain the most precise for substances taken within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of growing hair strands, it offers a long-term record of alcohol and drug use. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a three-month history of alcohol and drug use. Hair is straightforward to gather, fairly tough to manipulate, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for analysis and validation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. This step includes ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data input not available via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial fast examination for substance abuse. While Screening offers a budget-friendly method to exclude drug use on most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Any samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive during the Screening phase, more hair is taken from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, substances are removed from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as needed. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation per ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection window.
  • Difficulty to cheat: It is significantly hard to tamper with a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Provides historical data: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over an extended period, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are usually more costly than other drug testing approaches.
  • Variations in results: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often referred to as "hair follicle tests," the test actually analyzes the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Tests Outperform Urine Tests in Meadows Place, TX

Hair testing surpasses urine tests with a superior detection accuracy. Unlike urine tests, hair tests provide a longer window for substance detection, increasing reliability. Hair follicle tests are less susceptible to tampering, offering a much stronger defense against attempts to obscure true drug or alcohol use history.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
